How we make money

We write critical things about products people sell. You should know exactly where our money comes from so you can weigh what we say.

Where the line is

Some pages on this site carry commercial links. Others never will. The split is deliberate and it is not negotiable internally:

  • Never commercial: our research studies, any article testing whether a metric is accurate, and the free calculators. If we are telling you whether to trust a number, we are not simultaneously trying to sell you the device that produces it.
  • May carry affiliate links: buying guides and cross-brand comparison pages, clearly labelled at the top of the page.
  • May carry ads: troubleshooting articles — the “why is my watch doing this” pages.

Affiliate links

Where we use them, an affiliate link means we may earn a commission if you buy something after clicking. It never changes your price. It has never changed a verdict on this site, and the structural protection against that is the rule above: the pages where we pass judgement carry no commercial links at all.

Advertising

Where ads appear they are standard display units, placed after the first section or mid-article. No pop-ups, no interstitials, no units dressed up to look like our own content or navigation. Advertisers have no say in what we publish and are not shown anything before it goes live.

Our own products

We sell our own guides and reports. Those are clearly ours, and we would rather be paid by readers than by anyone else — reader-funded is the only revenue model that does not create a reason to soften a finding.

What we do not do

  • Sponsored posts, paid reviews, or “partnerships” that shape coverage.
  • Selling, renting, or sharing reader data. Ever.
  • Publishing anything a brand has approved in advance. No manufacturer gets a preview of a finding about their product.

Relationships worth stating

We previously ran a paid analytics service built on Garmin Connect data, which is where our research data comes from. That service is being retired. We have never had a commercial relationship with Garmin, and we are not part of any manufacturer's developer or ambassador programme. Read the methodology for what that history means for the data.

Hold us to it

If you spot a commercial link on a page that should not have one, tell us: hello@gneta.app. We will fix it and say that we did.
